Acknowledging the territory

Jesus calls us into the world to love one another as we are loved by God. As we came to this land, First Nations peoples welcomed us, sustained us and taught us. We did not hear them when they shared their vision.

In our zeal to tell them the good news of Jesus Christ, we were closed to the value of their spirituality.  We confused Western ways and culture with the depth, breadth, length and height of the gospel of Christ. We imposed our civilization as a condition of accepting the gospel. As a result, the image of the Creator in us is twisted, blurred, and we are not what we are meant by God to be. In our journey toward reconciliation, we acknowledge, this day, that we gather for worship on the traditional territories of:

  •  the Anishinaabe (the Ojibwe or Chippewa Nation)
  • the Haudenosaunee (the Iroquois, and the Oneida Nation)
  • the Lenape (the Delaware People)
  • the Attawandaron (the Neutral Nation or Algonquin People
    • and the Wendat (Huron People) as well as the other indigenous peoples who preceded them.

We acknowledge, with respect, their history, their spirituality, and their culture and seek to live into right relationship with all.

Call to Worship  ‘A Song of Faith’ from the United Church of Canada, as read by Rev Wendy Noble and our congregation

God is Holy Mystery,
beyond complete knowledge,
above perfect description.

Yet, in love,
the one eternal God seeks relationship.

So God creates the universe
and with it the possibility of being and relating.
God tends the universe,
mending the broken and reconciling the estranged.
God enlivens the universe,
guiding all things toward harmony with their Source.

Grateful for God’s loving action,
We cannot keep from singing.

With the Church through the ages,
we speak of God as one and triune:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We also speak of God as
Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer
God, Christ, and Spirit
Mother, Friend, and Comforter
Source of Life, Living Word, and Bond of Love,
and in other ways that speak faithfully of
the One on whom our hearts rely,
the fully shared life at the heart of the universe.

We witness to Holy Mystery that is Wholly Love….

We hear God’s Word: The United Church’s ‘A Song of Faith’, Lamentations 1:1-6 & Luke 17:5-10 as read by Ruth Kanu.

Note – Lamentations tells of Jerusalems destruction and its peoples exile to Babylonia.

the Word made flesh.
