Opening Prayer…

Holy and Sustaining God, we come to worship and praise you. We journeyed with you to Bethlehem and followed the star of the east.

Today we gather with you at the River Jordan, remembering Jesus’ baptism.

As we enter this season of epiphanies and revelations, may your Spirit stir our hearts and open our lives to new learnings and understandings.

Fill us with a willingness to go into the deep waters, ever mindful that you have called us by name and that you go with us. We pray this ancient prayer.

(Dora White – Gathering ACE 2021-22)

…The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.   For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

We Hear God’s Word Luke 3, 13-17 and 21-23, from The Message

13   John told them, “No more extortion—collect only what is required by law.”

14 Soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He told them, “No harassment, no blackmail—and be content with your rations.”

15 The interest of the people by now was building. They were all beginning to wonder, “Could this John be the Messiah?”

16-17 But John intervened: “I’m baptizing you here in the river. The main character in this drama, to whom I’m a mere stagehand, will ignite the kingdom life, a fire, the Holy Spirit within you, changing you from the inside out. He’s going to clean house—make a clean sweep of your lives. He’ll place everything true in its proper place before God; everything false he’ll put out with the trash to be burned.”

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry.

Blessing and Commissioning

As the water washed over Jesus, so may the words of our worship continue to wash over you as you go from this virtual place.

As Jesus emerged from the river refreshed in his ministry, may you emerge from this Zoom gathering refreshed in your ministry and ready to serve.

And may God, who has called, claimed and commissioned us, whom we experience as Creator, Christ and Comforter journey with us, this day and all our days. Amen

We all need to work on the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. ( see header ‘Truth, Reconciliation and Justice’ on home page)
